Palliative and Hospice Care

Palliative care at Golden Dawn involves all departments and all staff members.   Care is aimed at relieving suffering and improving quality of life for those who are living with, or dying from, an illness.   As a team, we provide care that is compassionate, competent, ethical and addresses a residents' physical, psychological, social, spiritual and practical needs.  We encourage opportunities for meaningful and valuable experiences and personal and spiritual growth consistent with the guidelines from the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.

Care is most effective when delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of knowledgeable and skilled healthcare providers.   At Golden Dawn we have both a core and an extended resource team focused on supporting residents and their families.

Upon request, Hospice support may be arranged through Bruce Peninsula Hospice.   Hospice volunteers provide non-medical services based on the individual needs and requests of the resident or resident’s family.   For more information visit www.bphospice.ca

Medical Assistance in Dying

At Golden Dawn we provide compassionate end-of-life care that values each person as a unique individual with unique needs and expectations.  Our goal is to support the resident and their family, empowering them to make informed decisions about the care they would like to receive based on their priorities and values and supporting their choices.

Should a resident request medical assistance in dying, our registered staff will dialogue with the resident to determine why the request has been made and where possible offer alternate treatment options for consideration.  If the resident desires to further explore and proceed with medical assistance in dying, we will refer the resident to an external caregiver able to honour the resident's wishes.

While we will respect the resident's request, as a Christian healthcare organization, we will not provide medical assistance in dying.

Until such time as the resident's request can be honoured, we will continue to provide quality care focused on support, comfort, compassion and dignity.
